America's Godly Heritage

Does America have a Godly heritage?  Was America founded on Godly principles?  Some say 'no,' but an accurate examination of history reveals that America does have a Godly heritage.  This can be seen by looking from the Pilgrims to the Declaration of Independence to what America's Founding Fathers said and through many, many, other examples.

Take for instance our money; on it we have the saying 'In God We Trust."  In the Pledge of Allegiance we read that America is "One Nation Under God."  Many of our state constitutions acknowledge God.

The United States Supreme Court has
acknowledged that this is a religious
nation.  Look at what the court stated in a                                                1892 case:

"...this is a religious people. This is
historically true. From the discovery of                this continent to the present hour, there is a single voice making                this affirmation..."1

As President Harry Truman wrote, "This is a Christian Nation."2

Alex de Tocqueville, a historian, stated regarding America:

Upon my arrival in the United States the religious aspect of the
country was the first thing that struck my attention...
In France I had almost always seen the spirit of religion and the spirit
of freedom marching in opposite directions.  But in America I found
they were intimately united and that they reigned in common over the
same country.3

But it is perhaps best summed up by Founding Father Patrick Henry, famous for his saying "Give me liberty or give me death!":

“It cannot be emphasized too
strongly or too often that this
great nation was founded,
not by religionists but by
Christians; not on religions,
but on the gospel of Jesus
Christ.  For this very reason
peoples of other faiths have
been afforded asylum,
prosperity, and freedom of
worship here.”4

Today, many don't know the Godly Heritage America has.  The Founding Fathers have been labeled athiests or deists.  In ways there has been a removal of God from government.  But when we look at true history we realize that America does have a rich Godly heritage.

As Winston Churchill said, “The greatest advances in human
civilization have come when we have recovered what we had lost:
when we learned the lessons of history.”5

Let's recover America's Godly heritage and keep America's heritage alive.
